Cost of Living
An adventurer’s primary source of income is treasure, and his primary purchases are tools and items he needs to continue adventuring—spell components, weapons, magic items, potions, and the like. Yet what about things like food? Rent? Taxes? Bribes? Idle purchases?

At the start of every game month, a PC must pay their rent (if any) and lifestlye tax, which includes the price of food, minor taxes, entertainment fees, etc (these are listed with the residency). If he can’t afford his desired bracket, he drops down to the first one he can afford.

What the cost of living tax covers is listed and is accumulative; that is to say, what it covers also includes everything that was covered before it.

Listed requirements are accumulative; that is to say, the requirements for a living unit also include all of the ones that came before it.

Destitute

Homeless: The PC is homeless and lives in the wilderness or on the streets. A destitute character must track every purchase, and may need to resort to Survival checks or theft to feed himself.

  • Cost of living tax: 0pd
  • What it covers: Nothing. PC needs to keep track of all purchases of meals, taxes, and other necessities.

Squatter: The PC lives in common rooms of taverns, with his parents, or in some other communal situation—this is the lifestyle of most untrained laborers and commoners.

  • Requirements: N/A
  • Rent: 10 pd/month
  • Buy: N/A
  • Cost of living tax: 0pd
  • What it covers: Nothing. PC needs to keep track of all purchases of meals, taxes, and other necessities.

Shanty: The PC lives in a crudely constructed living space, made with otherwise previously used and unrefurbished materials.

  • Requirements: Requires water from a nearby well or piped water.
  • Rent: 1 sh/month
  • Buy: 100 sh
  • Cost of living tax: 10pd
  • What it covers: Cost of water source upkeep and ready access to it, basic housing maintenance, and minimal security.
Poor residences

Small shack:

  • Requirements: Requires access to a general goods store.
  • Rent: 2 sh/month
  • Buy: 200 sh
  • Cost of living tax: 5sh
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 1 pd or less from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track taxes that cost 5 pd or less.

Medium shack:

  • Requirements: Requires meat from a butcher.
  • Rent: 3 sh/month
  • Buy: 300 sh
  • Cost of living tax: 7sh
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 2 pd or less from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track meat purchases that cost 5 pd or less. Owners need not track taxes that cost 7 pd or less.

Large shack:

  • Requirements: Requires olive oil from an olive press, bread from a baker, and requires clothes from a tailor.
  • Rent: 4 sh/month
  • Buy: 400 sh
  • Cost of living tax: 10sh
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 5 pd or less from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track olive oil, bread, or clothing purchases that cost 10 pd or less. Owners need not track taxes that cost 10 pd or less.
Average

Small Apartment:

  • Requirements: Requires access to a tavern
  • Rent: 20 so/month
  • Buy: 2,000 so
  • Cost of living tax: 50so
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 1 sh or less from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track purchases from the tavern that cost 10 pd or less. Owners need not track taxes that cost 1 sh, 1 so, or less.

Medium Apartment

  • Requirements: Requires furniture from a carpenter
  • Rent: 30 so/month
  • Buy: 3,000 so
  • Cost of living tax: 80so
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 2 so or less from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track furniture purchases that cost 5sh or less. Owners need not track purchases of taxes that cost 5 sh, 5 so, or less.

Large Apartment

  • Requirements: Requires access to a blacksmith, a barber, and requires health care from a hospital
  • Rent: 40 so/month
  • Buy: 4,000 so
  • Cost of living tax: 100so
  • What it covers: PC can secure any nonmagical item worth 5 so, 5 sh, or less, from his home in 1d10 minutes. Owners need not track blacksmith, barber, or hospital purchases that cost 10sh or less. Owners need not track purchases of taxes that cost 10 sh, 10 so, or less.
